Near-Zero Modes in Superconducting Graphene

چکیده
Vortices in the simplest superconducting state of graphene contain very low energy excitations, whose existence is connected to an index theorem that applies strictly to an approximate form of the relevant Bogoliubov-deGennes equations. When Zeeman interactions are taken into account, the zero modes required by the index theorem are (slightly) displaced. Thus the vortices acquire internal structure; the resulting “modicules” obey nonabelian quantum statistics.

Spatially resolved edge currents and guided-wave electronic states in graphene
Exploiting the light-likeproperties of carriers ingraphene could allow extreme non-classical forms of electronic transport to be realized1–8. In this vein, finding ways to confine and direct electronic waves through nanoscale streams and streamlets, unimpeded by the presence of other carriers, has remained a grand challenge9–12. Inspired by guiding of light in fibre optics, here we demonstrate ...
متن کاملExcitation gap of a graphene channel with superconducting boundaries
We calculate the density of states of electron-hole excitations in a superconductor–normal-metal– superconductor SNS junction in graphene, in the long-junction regime that the superconducting gap 0 is much larger than the Thouless energy ET= v /d with v the carrier velocity in graphene and d the separation of the NS boundaries . If the normal region is undoped, the excitation spectrum consists ...
متن کاملZero modes of various graphene configurations from the index theorem
In this article we consider a graphene sheet that is folded in various compact geometries with arbitrary topology described by a certain genus, g. While the Hamiltonian of these systems is defined on a lattice one can take the continuous limit. The obtained Dirac-like Hamiltonian describes well the low energy modes of the initial system. Starting from first principles we derive an index theorem...
متن کاملMajorana zero modes in one-dimensional quantum wires without long-ranged superconducting order
We show that long-ranged superconducting order is not necessary to guarantee the existence of Majorana fermion zero modes at the ends of a quantum wire. We formulate a concrete model, which applies, for instance, to a semiconducting quantum wire with strong spin-orbit coupling and Zeeman splitting coupled to a wire with algebraically decaying superconducting fluctuations. We solve this model by...
متن کاملBroken symmetries, zero-energy modes, and quantum transport in disordered graphene: from supermetallic to insulating regimes.
The role of defect-induced zero-energy modes on charge transport in graphene is investigated using Kubo and Landauer transport calculations. By tuning the density of random distributions of monovacancies either equally populating the two sublattices or exclusively located on a single sublattice, all conduction regimes are covered from direct tunneling through evanescent modes to mesoscopic tran...
